Why is this medication prescribed?

How does it work?

Bacterial cells need to produce DNA, in order to grow and increase in numbers. To produce DNA they require folate. However, bacterial cells cannot take up folate supplied in the diet like usual human cells can. Instead, they synthesize folate by themselves.

Bactrim action is based on preventing production of folate by bacteria. Without folate, the bacteria can’t produce genetic material (DNA) and so are unable to multiply in numbers. In this way, Bactrim stops the spread of infection. The remaining bacteria are killed by human immune system.

Your health care professional may take a tissue sample from the infected local area to make sure the bacteria that cause an infection are susceptible to Bactrim. The bacteria present in this sample will be cultured in a microbiology department and then identified under a microscope.
